The Motions
"The motions continue perfectly, and no one is home."
Bonhoeffer warned against a faith that had become an idea to be admired rather than a call to be obeyed. Grace without discipleship, he wrote in Discipleship, is grace without Christ. The prayer that costs nothing begins, over years, to address no one in particular.
In your most recent act of worship, were you present to God, or present to the routine? Write your honest evidence — not what you wish were true, but what you can actually remember.
If your practice were removed tomorrow, what — if anything — would you miss first: the encounter, or the routine?
